Local Beaches

Maywick Beach

Just a 10 minute hike from MirrieMöra glamping site or 10-15 minutes by car.

Maywick beach is known for being sheltered, quiet and tranquil. Access is via a narrow uneven pathway with sometimes quite steep access onto the sand so this needs to be taken into account when visiting.

The surrounding cliffs are a favourite spot for nesting fulmars, making it a great location for birdwatching.

Views out over to South Havra and East Burra alongside the picturesque burn which runs down the beach, constantly changing in size and direction, sometimes a narrow stream and other times branching out and offering a large shallow pond ideal for children to play.

St Ninians Isle

The jewel in the Shetland crown, this stunning tombolo beach is located only a 10 minute drive from MirrieMöra glamping site.

The Isle at the far end of the sandy tombolo features the ruins of a 12th century church where treasure was discovered in 1958. The treasures consisted of 28 Pictish silver objects, believed to be dated around 800AD.

Original treasures are held at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh with replicas displayed at the Shetland Museum & Archives.

Rerwick Beach

A beautiful south-facing beach a 12-15 minute drive from MirrieMöra. Rerwick beach is best viewed from the road as this is a designated seal haul out area. Haul out areas are where seals come out of the water to rest, moult, breed and have pups. Seals that are hauled out are legally protected and it is an offence to disturb them. The beach is accessible on foot, however, this should be avoided when seals are hauled out.

For more information on designated seal haul out areas please visit: the scottish government website.

Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

Video © Richard Ashbee.

This video was taken from St Ninians Isle not far from MirrieMöra. Shetland is a fantastic place to view the Northern Lights when skies are clear.

The Northern Lights are a natural light display, particularly visible in polar regions. The Northern Lights can appear as swirling, majestic curtains of light, moving and changing shapes and colours. They can also be seen as patches, scattered clouds, or rays of light.

What an amazing place to stay! So quiet and peaceful with beautiful views. The pod is so clean and comfortable, with everything you could ever need. A lovely part of Shetland, we spent a lot of time at the Maywick beach just down the hill - awesome. Would love to go back again!
